Daily Hair Loss

On a normal day, most people have a daily hair loss of about 100 hairs from their scalp. Since the average person has about 100,000 hair follicles, this represents a loss of approximately one-tenth of one percent a day. By understanding the process by which hair grows, one can understand the difference between balding and normal daily hair loss.

When hair is growing, it is said to be in the Anagen phase. This phase usually lasts from two to six years and produces hair at a rate of one-half inch of hair per month. On a healthy scalp, as much as 90 percent of the follicles can be in the Anagen stage at a given time. Next is the Catagen phase which lasts one to two weeks, during which the hair follicle shrinks and eventually is separated from the blood supply.

Subsequently, the follicle enters a resting period called the Telogen phase which lasts between three to six weeks. During this period, the hair may not grow, but does remain attached to the scalp. One to two percent of follicles are in this phase at any point in time. It is only when the Anagen phase begins anew that old hairs are pushed out by the newly formed hairs. This process is the origin of our daily hair loss.

Reducing Daily Hair Loss

Over time, DHT builds up in the hair follicles, creating earlier onset and longer duration of the Telogen phase. Daily hair loss is increased and in subsequent Anagen phases, the hair shaft becomes finer and weaker. Kevis products work to remove harmful DHT and encourage a healthier hair growing cycle.
